The Main Type of Activity of the Company in Montenegro
If you have read my detailed and free immigration guide (which you can request from me), you’ve seen that to register a company in Montenegro, I ask you to specify the main type of activity. What does this mean, and how does it differ from additional types of activity? Let’s take a closer look.

All Activities Are Already in the Statute
Our company statutes include all activity types listed in the official classification. We simply took the entire classification and inserted it into the statute. The only exceptions are 20–30 activity types that cannot be included in the statute before receiving special permission. These are usually large-scale activities, such as banking, insurance, universities, schools, etc., which most of you won’t need.
Why Do We Ask for the Main Activity?
Despite all possible activity types being listed in the statute, we always ask each client to name the main type of activity before preparing the company documents. So, what is the difference between the main activity and the additional ones?
It’s simple: a company can operate in multiple areas at once. There’s nothing stopping you from opening a company that deals with, for example, programming, selling sausages, offering travel services, and grooming dogs—all at the same time. But even though the company may work in many directions, it is important that it includes the declared main activity from the moment of registration.
For example, if your company’s main activity is selling sausages, you must actually sell sausages. At the same time, you may also offer programming services, provide tourist services, and groom dogs.
What If You Are Not Engaged in the Main Activity?
It’s not uncommon for someone to come to Montenegro with one idea in mind—say, opening a shop to sell sausages. But after arriving, they might reconsider and decide not to sell sausages, and instead start grooming dogs.
According to current rules in Montenegro, in such cases you need to change the main type of activity. A document package must be prepared and submitted to the Central Register to make this change. Contact us—we will update your company information accordingly.
If You’re Not Planning to Operate a Business
One final note: everything written above applies to companies that actually plan to conduct business. If you are opening a company in Montenegro only to obtain a residence permit, then this article is not relevant to your situation.
