From May 24 to July 19 of this year, Montenegro for the first time produced enough energy from renewable sources to cover 100% of the country’s needs.
Montenegro proves its green potential
Were there people who doubted Montenegro’s environmental quality? Come and live here—it’s great!

Thus, Montenegro joined the small group of countries that can proudly say they generate all their energy from renewable sources. During the mentioned period, Montenegro produced 8% more energy than it needed.
The role of hydro and wind power
Currently, there are two state-owned hydroelectric power plants operating in Montenegro. These stations have been active for many years but were only partially meeting the country’s energy demands. In previous years, Montenegro had to import electricity.
However, a few years ago, a decision was made to build small hydro and wind power plants. As we can see now, this policy turned out to be successful.
To be honest, I didn’t even know this morning that Montenegro had wind power plants. It turns out not only do they exist, but they also generate up to 28% of the country’s electricity. The record was reached on May 28, a particularly windy day.
A strong statement from the government
The Montenegrin government stated that the experience of the past year shows the country can fully meet its electricity needs using only renewable sources. For this, proper planning, reserve capacities, and strong interconnection between power systems are needed.
According to a government representative, “Our example shows that Montenegrins fully meet their international obligations, and the efforts made are already bearing fruit. Montenegro is an environmentally clean country, and our example proves that the global transition to renewable energy is possible.”
The future of renewables in Montenegro
By the way, the Montenegrin government does not plan to stop here. In the near future, two more wind farms and one of the largest solar power plants in Europe will be built.
All these projects are planned without subsidies for investors. The investors will earn profits solely by selling their product—electricity.
