January in Montenegro is perhaps the most interesting month in terms of changing weather. Around New Year’s Eve, the weather was simply wonderful — sunny, clear, but not hot — with temperatures around +7–8°C. The first few days were also sunny and frosty (+1–2°C). At Christmas, however, strong winds blew through, and the north of the country was buried in snow.

Fortunately, within a single day, municipal services managed to clear the snow from the roads, reopening the main routes. This allowed us to visit Žabljak, where the weather was again not too harsh — light snow fell from time to time, but overall it was a calm and steady winter (0 to –4°C).
Warmer Days on the Coast
After returning to the coast in mid-January, we were greeted by the gentle sun again, and the average temperature reached +10–12°C. Of course, you can sit outside on the terrace for 15–20 minutes in just a light jacket. It’s also the best time to air out the house — fresh and mild weather helps with that.
By the twentieth of January, the wind picked up again, and once there was even a thunderstorm — although a very mild one.
Citrus Harvest Season
January is the month of the citrus harvest in Montenegro. We enjoyed juicy oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits.

In addition to fruit, the first flowers began to bloom during this time (unfortunately, I can’t recall the names), and even carnations blossomed!

The First Signs of Spring
Most importantly, mimosa trees started to bloom — the first true sign of approaching spring on the Montenegrin coast. These small yellow flowers, covering the tree branches, are a pure delight and signal the coming of long-awaited warmth — without the need for heaters! People start selling mimosa everywhere — it’s such a joyful sight. We can’t wait for the Mimosa Festival. We will definitely visit it, one way or another. The event promises to be grand!
Overall, the days are lovely — plenty of sunshine, a chilly breeze from the sea or mountains, but still warm enough to take walks with kids or have coffee at an outdoor café. The sea is usually calm, with soft waves rolling in. The colors are mesmerizing — white near the shore, followed by a thin green strip, then suddenly turning into deep blue. It’s truly beautiful.
There’s something magical about watching this slow yet endless motion of the sea while leaning against a rock and soaking up the sun. In these moments, you feel calm and peaceful. Bad thoughts fade away, making space for good feelings and gentle hope…
