Married to a Montenegrin

Thinking About Marrying a Montenegrin?

If you’re planning to find a husband (or wife) in Montenegro, this article might be useful to you. To begin with, it’s worth noting that foreign-Montenegrin marriages do happen. I can’t say they are very common, but that’s mostly because most foreigners who immigrate to Montenegro are adults with stable lives who move with their families. So, the majority of immigrants simply don’t need to look for a spouse.

However, when a single woman or man moves to Montenegro, they often do find a partner—sometimes from their own community, but often from the local population.

Marriage and Divorce Statistics in Montenegro

Enough theory—let’s get to the point. Today I want to share the latest statistics on marriages and divorces in Montenegro.

In 2019, 3,523 marriages were registered in the country. In the same year, there were 841 divorces. Some may think those numbers seem small, but before jumping to conclusions, check the population size of Montenegro.

The average age of women getting married is 28, while for men it’s 31.

The lowest number of marriages happens in January. For example, only 137 weddings took place in January last year. The most popular month for weddings is September—with 435 marriages registered. In general, people are more likely to marry between May and December. In January, February, March, and April, the number of weddings drops significantly.

As for divorces, they occur steadily throughout the year. There’s no specific period when people divorce more or less often.

How Long Do Marriages Last in Montenegro?

As we can see, the number of marriages each year is several times higher than the number of divorces. But how long do the marriages that eventually end in divorce actually last? MONSTAT (Montenegro’s official statistics agency) provides the answer:

  • 3.1% of marriages end in divorce within the first year.
  • 51.5% of divorces happen between the 1st and 9th year.
  • 25.9% last between 10 and 19 years.
  • 19.5% of divorces occur after 20 or more years of marriage.

The average age of divorced women is 38, and for men, it’s 42.

Is Marrying a Montenegrin Really Possible?

Many Russian women have married Montenegrin men—it’s not only possible, it has become quite normal. Such marriages no longer surprise anyone. There are plenty of Russians living in Montenegro, and among them are often single women who eventually get married—often to Montenegrins.
