Did you know that if you have a residence permit in Montenegro, you can receive child benefits? Not long ago, benefits were only given for children under 6 years old, but a new law was passed and now benefits are paid for children up to the age of 18.
The Amount of Child Benefits in Montenegro
The benefit is quite small—just €30 per child. If the child has a disability, the amount is higher, but for “regular” children, it’s only €30.

There is a paradoxical situation here. Most foreigners who receive a residence permit in Montenegro pay only €30 per month in taxes, hiding 99.9% of their income. At the same time, the government essentially gives that money back to you in the form of child benefits. On top of that, they also provide free healthcare and free education. In other words, the government spends more on foreigners than it receives from them in taxes. A paradox indeed! What other European country does this?
What You Need to Get Child Benefits in Montenegro
To apply for child benefits, you must have either temporary or permanent residency in Montenegro. You also need documents confirming your residential address. Importantly, you must live in the same household as your child (well, where else would the parents live?).
Payments are made once a month at the post office, which is not the most convenient method. Why not use a bank account instead? But, as the saying goes, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
