Baosići, a village in Montenegro

Articles

Baosići is a small village located on Montenegro’s coast, near the popular resort of Herceg Novi. Its main appeal lies in peace and tranquility. Unlike larger resorts like Budva, Herceg Novi, or Kotor, Baosići is not crowded with tourists. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway, turn your attention to this charming spot. Absolute silence on the Montenegrin coast is unrealistic, but Baosići is undoubtedly quieter than the hotspot destinations, and here’s why:

The primary noise sources at Montenegro’s resorts are the tourist infrastructure—cafés with live music, nightclubs, and amusement parks. Smaller villages have far fewer such facilities than large towns.

Nearby Attractions and Convenience

Still, if you ever feel bored, you can easily head to a larger resort for more attractions and entertainment, and the journey won’t take long. Let’s look at distances from Baosići:

  • Distance to Herceg Novi – 11 km
  • Distance to Tivat – 12 km
  • Distance to Kotor – 35 km

You can travel between these towns by bus. The bus network is quite reliable, with frequent departures, though you might wait a little. For more convenience, consider renting a car.

Life in Baosići

About 1,500 people live in Baosići year‑round. The village is situated in the Boka-Kotor Bay, a UNESCO protected natural landmark known for its beauty.

Baosići is an ancient settlement, first mentioned in the 14th century. It started as a fishing village—like other coastal settlements such as Kumbor. Besides fishing, residents traded: at its peak during the age of sailing, Baosići owned thirty ocean-going ships, which is impressive for a fishing village.

Today, few locals live off fishing, although some still do. Most are connected to tourism: some rent apartments, others work in the tourism industry.

Weather in Baosići

The weather supports tourism. The beach season runs from early May to late September. A small number of tourists keep swimming until early November. Water temperatures in October are similar to May, but the air cools significantly, so the season is considered to end in late September. Personally, my swimming season ends on September 15—you can keep swimming longer, but I prefer warmer water.

Below is a screenshot showing water temperatures in the region.

Another image shows daytime air temperatures. As you can see, Baosići doesn’t experience severe cold even in winter.

Rainfall is rare and brief in summer, so your holiday won’t be spoiled by showers.

Local Attractions

While Baosići itself has few attractions, there are several to explore, and many more nearby. If you’re planning to explore the country, start with Perašt, Kotor, Tivat, or Herceg Novi—all rich in history. I previously showed how to reach them; another great option is to book a coastal tour, where you can visit all these towns in one day with a guide.

In Baosići itself:

  • Church of St. Nicholas, early 19th century
  • Old Captain’s House, a small museum celebrating the village’s rich past
  • Captain’s Palace, baroque style, 18th century

Baosići Beaches

The beaches in Baosići are typical of the region—pebble and concrete beaches. Access is free. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas. There are changing cabins, showers, and nearby cafés. Water sports are available too—catamaran rentals included.

Accommodation

You’ll find many hotels and apartments in Baosići—all are available for rent. But remember, you’re not the only one looking for accommodation in Montenegro. Delay your booking and your ideal place may be gone. Finding an apartment or hotel room that meets all your criteria and is reasonably priced just a couple of weeks before arrival can be very difficult.

  • Lowest prices: May and September
  • Highest prices: July and August

When to visit? It depends on your priorities:

  1. How much you want to spend on lodging
  2. Availability of cheap flights
  3. Your holiday style—if you prefer sightseeing and walking, early or late season is more comfortable due to milder weather. If you prefer lounging on the beach, you’ll want the warmest water in July and August.

Restaurants and Shopping

Baosići has fewer restaurants than Herceg Novi, but the selection is good and you won’t go hungry. For more variety, walk to Kumbor, Djenovići, Bijela, or take a quick trip to Herceg Novi. Restaurant prices are similar across nearby resorts.

Shopping in Baosići is limited to necessities—groceries, toiletries, beach goods. For more diverse shopping, go to Herceg Novi or Budva. Note: September sales start across Montenegro, so you can find brand-name items at great prices—another good reason to visit late in the season.

How to Get to Baosići

Montenegro has two international airports—the closest to Baosići is Tivat Airport, about 45 minutes away.

You can:

  • Book a transfer
  • Rent a car
  • Take a taxi (the most expensive option)
  • Travel by bus, though you’d first need to get to the bus station, as buses don’t run to the airport directly
